At 40, Tara Lawson’s world falls apart. A painful divorce and the loss of her job as a journalist leave her reeling. But it’s the news of her beloved grandmother’s passing that draws her back to her childhood home in Seagrove, South Carolina, to settle the estate.

In the midst of her grief, Tara unexpectedly reconnects with Noah, her childhood best friend. Now a successful sea glass artist, Noah’s steadfast presence becomes a comforting anchor. Together, they revive their old tradition of hunting for sea glass, a simple joy that begins to heal Tara’s emotional wounds.

As the summer unfolds, their bond deepens, and a profound love blossoms. The peaceful beach town, the shared silence and laughter, and the beauty of sea glass all play a part in Tara’s healing process.

But as the season draws to a close, Tara is faced with a decision that threatens to unravel everything she’s rebuilt. Torn between two paths, she must choose what she truly wants.

Sea Glass Summer  by Rachel Hanna is part of an ongoing series. This book is #11. It mainly focuses on Tara, returning home after her grandmother’s death, and Noah – Tara’s long term friend who now, as the story continues becomes something more.

The story also includes Julie who has been keeping a long term secret from her family and friends, she has been writing her first book. We learn of her journey and ultimate success.

I particularly liked the setting and the inclusion of the sea glass in the story, and the cover is really inviting.  There is a sense of a broad community of people who are there for each other.

The narrator does a competent narration and added to the story. I think this book will be welcomed by those who have been enjoying the series since its beginning.

The Wartime Book Club. Kate Thompson

The Wartime Book Club

Published: Hachette Audio
Date: 9th April 2024
Narrator: Imogen Church
Length:16 hours 30 min
Source: Publisher via NetGalley

The Isle of Jersey was once a warm and neighborly community, but in 1943, German soldiers patrol the cobbled streets, imposing a harsh rule.

Nazis have ordered Grace La Mottée, the island’s only librarian, to destroy books that threaten the new regime. Instead, she hides the stories away in secret. Along with her headstrong best friend, she wants to fight back. So she forms the Wartime Book Club: a lifeline, offering fearful islanders the joy and escapism of reading.

But as the occupation drags on, the women’s quiet acts of bravery become more perilous – and more important – than ever before. And when tensions turn to violence, they are forced to face the true, terrible cost of resistance . . .

Based on astonishing real events, The Wartime Book Club is a love letter to the power of books in the darkest of times – as well as a moving page-turner that brings to life the remarkable, untold story of an island at war.

The Wartime Bookclub is a moving, harrowing and very realistic story of life in Jersey during World War 2. Jersey being close to France, was occupied by the Germans for most of the war. While being near France Jersey has closer ties to England.

The story follows the friends Grace and Bea, two young women who were very brave in the way they went about thwarting the German soldiers. It is the young women’s story along with their family and friends and coworkers. And it is a story of the power of books.

Bea works in the post office and delivers letters all over the island, Grace works in the local library. Grace establishes a book club to help morale and many of the local islanders turn to books to keep them going.

It was a terrible time for the islanders, this book helps to show just how much. I loved the characters, I was in awe of their bravery and heartened by their care for each other. I was saddened by those who turned on their own neighbors, and horrified by the brutality of war.

Imogen Church really brings the characters alive. I was almost sure for a time that there were a whole cast of narrators, but no, just the one. This is a very. emotional story and her narration beautifully enhances it.

I highly recommend the audio version of The Wartime Book Club.

Celebrating 2021 Reading

And so 2021 reading comes to a close. And so some observations.

        1. In 2021  I read 151 books.  I set out to read 100. Between 100 and 150 is my normal, and feels about right for my reading pace. Screen Shot 2021-12-31 at 7.03.52 AM
        2. I think of that 151 about 27 were audiobooks. I had a good year in audiobooks and enjoyed them from both Audible and Libby – which came into play in September and meant I cut back to one credit a month at Audible. As Audible now has quite a few books in the Audible Plus section for members that gives even more possibilities.  So many great narrators. Sandra Burr, Dick Hill,Mia Gaskin, Katherine Kellgren, January LaVoy, Brittany Pressley… to name but a few.
        3.  I am a reader who once I find a good series, I generally stay faithful to it. And in 2021 t was no different. I continued with some, finished a couple and started a few new ones. So some of the series I am into, not all! Mary Marks finished her series and is no longer writing. I started the Haunted Library and Anna Lee Huber series and am all caught up. I’ve read some of Karen Rose but am now committing to going right back to the beginning.
        4. Last week I looked at new to me authors, so here I’ll mention some of the “old faves” authors I again read in 2021.

      5. And a small observation to end the year. I started out intending to read…book coverBut its still sitting on the sideboard with only a few pages read. But… I did read and enjoy

And I set off looking at the life and times of Jane Austen on You Tube, seeing where she lived etc. I will want to read some more about her and I will get to Pride and Prejudice and then Emma, but learning some of the way women lived in those times will enable me to better understand her books.

Listening is Reading.

I like to listen to books, and have quite a library of them now. Recently I have been making use of some of the series sale at Audible, which means I have more than I can listen to at the moment. I seem also to be gathering cozy mysteries this way. Maybe 2021 is the year of the Cozy Mystery for me.

Cruel Winter This is #5 in a series. No I haven’t read any others and I won’t listen to this one until I come to it most likely.  It is set in County Cork.

This isn’t one I bought, part of the Included, which means I can borrow it for as long as I like. So there is time to reach it.

book cover

This is #6 in the Royal Spyness series and I have listened to the previous five. They are good fun and generally have a good mystery. Also lighthearted.

book cover Another series I haven’t tried and this is #1 in the Liz Talbot series. Set in South Carolina.

book cover

This is #1 in the Fixer Upper series. A High End Finish by Kate Carlisle. This is the one I will start with.

book cover

And this one is #1 in a series by the same title as the book. Nora the owner of a bookshop can prescribe the right book for a person evidently.

Five Audiobooks I Plan to Listen to Soon

I love a good audiobook. A well written book in the hands of a really good narrator is the ultimate. I am just looking ahead to what I want to pick up very soon to listen to. I am not sure which will be first, but it will be one from this list.

I already own Born a Crime so this one has to be up there to listen to very soon

I recently listened to #3 in this series and its made me put this one way up the list of TBL books.

Due to be published mid October and this is certainly on my soon to be listened to list. I love this series set on Mure.

I enjoy Sarah Morgan’s books and this is her latest and will be a good listen no doubt near Christmas.

I’d put this one into my TBR after seeing Elizabeth from Silver Reviews recommend. And it looks good and summery and well summer is advancing here in NZ!

Five Audiobooks Awaiting.

As this is audiobook month I thought I’d share audiobooks I’ve bought but haven’t yet listened to. I am a slow listener!  Looking through my audio library I am ashamed to say I have a few more than five!

book coverA Week in Winter. 11hrs 34 min. Narrated by Caroline Lennon. Added to my library 2019. The Sheedy sisters had lived in Stone House for as long as anyone could remember. Set high on the cliffs on the west coast of Ireland, overlooking the windswept Atlantic ocean, it was falling into disrepair – until one woman, with a past she needed to forget, breathed new life into the place. Now a hotel, with a big, warm kitchen and log fires, it provides a welcome few can resist.

book coverThe Idea of You. 10hrs. Narrated by the author. Added to my library in 2017. With her 40th birthday approaching, Lucy Carpenter dares to hope that she finally has it all: a wonderful new husband, Jonah, a successful career and the chance of a precious baby of her own. Life couldn’t be more perfect.

But the reality of becoming parents proves much harder than Lucy and Jonah imagined. Jonah’s love and support is unquestioning, but as Lucy struggles with work and her own failing dreams, the strain on their marriage increases. Suddenly it feels like Lucy is close to losing everything…

book coverThe Sun Sister. 26 hrs 14 min. Narrated by Weruche Opia, Sophie Roberts. Added 2020. To the outside world, Electra D’Aplièse seems to be the woman with everything: as one of the world’s top models, she is beautiful, rich and famous.

Yet beneath the veneer, Electra’s already tenuous control over her state of mind has been rocked by the death of her father, Pa Salt, the elusive billionaire who adopted his six daughters from across the globe. Struggling to cope, she turns to alcohol and drugs. As those around her fear for her health, Electra receives a letter from a complete stranger who claims to be her grandmother.

book coverCode Name Hélène: The White Mouse. 17hrs 17min. Narrated by Barrie Kreinik and Peter Ganim. Added 2020.  In 1936 Nancy Wake is living in Paris after bluffing her way into a job as a foreign correspondent and witnessing firsthand the terror of Hitler’s rise in Europe, firing her determination to do anything she could to fight the Nazis. When Nancy falls unexpectedly in love with handsome French industrialist and playboy Henri Fiocca in Marseilles, no sooner has she agreed to become Mrs Fiocca than the Germans invade France and Nancy takes yet another name, a code name – the first of many.

book coverThe Hideaway. 15hrs 45 min. Narrated by January LaVoy. Added 2020. Caitlyn Sullivan is just nine years old when a game of hide-and-seek at a family party will change her life forever.

The betrayal she experienced that night will shape Caitlyn’s life – and for years she runs and runs, hiding from the aftermath of the trauma. But Caitlyn comes to realise that if she wants to not just survive but thrive, she must return to the family home to face up to her past.

What happened that night may always haunt Caitlyn, but she must decide if it’s what you’re running from that matters. Or who finds you.

And… for my next listen I am just as likely to buy something else! It depends on the mood. A couple of them are really long and sometimes a slightly shorter one draws me. About 9 – 13 hours are about my favourite. The Sun Sisters is about 26hours so not sure when I’ll get to that! I don’t listen to it fast so actual time!

Goodreads reads

Cover Love

I think I like those blues and summer feel!

Most Surprising

Why? It’s a male author and I rarely read them. The cover is uninviting. The book is such fun and the heroine, a seventy something, is amazing. The writing is wonderful and while the story moves reasonably slowly it is still totally engaging.
