It’s Monday! What are You Reading?

badge
It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? a place to meet up and share what you have been, and are about to be reading over the week. It’s a great post to organise yourself. It’s an opportunity to visit and comment and er… add to your groaning TBR pile! So welcome in everyone. This meme started on J Kaye’s blog and then was hosted by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn here at The Book Date.
Jen Vincent, Teach Mentor Texts, and Kellee of Unleashing Readers decided to give It’s Monday! a kidlit focus. If you read and review books in children’s literature – picture books, chapter books, middle grade novels, young adult novels or anything in those genres – join them.

Welcome in.

On the whole my week was good, not stirring out that much because of the virus being rampant around us at the moment in NZ. Some of my extended family are sick with it, and it does worry me as one is not vaccinated. Walking into the unknown really.

Our government has gone down in the polls so they are doing things to bring themselves into popularity again. So annoying. Guess it’s politics.

I’ve spent the week not listening to the news, it is just too heartbreaking.

What I read last week:

Ink and Shadows was really good. A Hope Divided was also good and to me an outsider told me quite a bit about how the USA has come about from its history. A Family Affair is for review, only to say here I think it could have benefited from better editing and development.

What I am reading now:

From my print shelf and enjoying it. #1 in the series so I guess I’ll be following up. I am doing an informal challenge that needed food and recipes. I wish I could call into this place, food is yummy.

From the library. A highly recommended middle grade book.

  1. I hope your family members have gotten well by now. I don’t know anyone who’s had the virus; we do get notifications from the school and school district if there is an exposure. I think we’ve been okay, *knocks on wood.*

  2. Oh I hope your extended family recovers and has an easy case. So scary – especially the unvaccinated person. They tend to be hit so much harder. I’m glad you’re enjoying the Ellie Alexander series! The food descriptions always make me hungry!

  3. Oh the news and that monster telling his people that he’s eradicating Nazis by invading Ukraine, when he’s the one that’s a war criminal. I can’t watch it either. Keeping your loved ones in my prayers. I have a few unvaccinated in my family too. What can you do

  4. I hope your family all recover well from their cases. Sad that it seems that politics everywhere is full of stress instead of service.
I like all your books, read and coming up. I’m tempted by the Cole series.
    Have a good week!

  5. sigh … I know what you mean. The news is so horribly depressing right now – fresh horrors every day. My family is Ukrainian – I don’t know anyone there (my great-grandparents moved here in the 1910’s), but it’s my heritage and watching all this on the news is just heartbreaking.

So sorry to hear you have family members with COVID now. It was wonderful that NZ avoided the virus for so long. We’ve lost almost a million people now here in the US, and still, people don’t take it seriously. Now, people are returning to “normal” life and acting like the danger is past, but my son’s girlfriend just got it and I just read there are 15 MILLION here suffering from “long COVID” (which is often the immune disorder I have, ME/CFS). I’m still not recovered from my bout in January, though that’s to be expected. Sorry! More bad news 🙂 I’ll keep your family in my thoughts and prayers.

Glad you had a variety of good books to distract and comfort this past week! Hope you enjoy your books this week, too.

    1. Oh wow, Ukrainian heritage Sue. Something to be proud of and heartbroken about. I wondered whether long covid had affected you, I thought it might but hadn’t seen you say anything. Yay for good books indeed.

  6. One of my non-vaccinated family members caught the virus and was very sick – but not hospitalized. I hope all your family members recover soon and that you stay healthy! I, too, am enjoying the Ellery Adams’ series! Happy reading and, yes, the news is heartbreaking….hugs to you!

  7. The Ellery Adams bookshop series interests me, because, well books! And Meet Your Baker, I read years ago. I’m sure if I reread it now I would be craving all they yummys. Actually all your mentioned books are ones I wouldn’t mind reading, depending on my mood.
Stay safe and enjoy your books.

  8. It’s all about the coming Federal election here due in May, so much petty politics in play!
So far none of my immediate family (we are all triple vaxxed) have gotten CoVid, but I know it’s inevitable because even though I restrict my movements and still wear a mask, the kids are unmasked at school where there are dozens of cases a week, and at work in high exposure jobs (retail & hospitality). I hope your family members recover quickly.

I hope the MG book lives up to your expectations

Wishing you a great reading week

  9. I’m sorry that Covid is getting bad over there. I wish it would just go away already. This has been way too long.

I have to read the Ellie Alexander series. It really looks perfect for me. l

I hope you have a great week!

    1. Yvonne I am enjoying the Baker book – the first but I do believe I’ll want to read more! Wouldn’t we all love Covid to go away, but I guess going to need to be patient. Advice to self!

  10. My neighbour has just gone down with it Kathryn. And my daughter-in-law and grandson have just recovered. It’s certainly a worry, and it’s nowhere near over yet with new variants developing all the time. I rarely go out any more, only to get groceries and close family things. I am heading to Hamilton tomorrow for an appointment, then I’m picking up the boys from school and taking them out for afternoon tea and a visit to the bookstore – Nana’s treat. Stay safe and read on.

    1. Yes I have reined in quite a bit. Just a little shopping and a friend or two. Even family we have stopped just for now, it is so widespread. I have my fingers crossed for my family, even though I am only the aunt/great aunt we are close. Hope the bookstore trip goes well. Ah love a Nana’s treat. I was just picking out a couple of books at Paperplus online for another great niece whose birthday is in April.

  11. I go through days that I don’t check the news. Recently, the federal legislature voted to have daylight savings time be permanent. Seems to me with what is going on in the Ukraine and record high inflation here, they should be worried about something other than that. 😦

Your books look good this week. I would love to read A Hope Divided. Civil War fiction is one of my favorite genres.

  12. Good idea to avoid going out with the uptick in cases. Thank goodness for our love of reading. It has made such a positive difference in how I’ve managed the past two years! I hope your loved ones will have a speedy recovery.

    1. Thanks Mary. I hope they do okay too. The worst is they live in a very small place and I think they’ll all get it. Parents and two children. One came home from school with it. Yes reading sure makes a difference and as well quilting for me too keeps me sane.

  13. I was just at the grocery store and barely made it through the bakery section without buying anything. The cover of Meet Your Baker makes me want to go back and buy all the desserts!

I’m sorry the covid/political situation is getting stressful in New Zealand. I hope things improve soon, especially for your sick family members.

    Take care!
