It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? a place to meet up and share what you have been, and are about to be reading over the week. It’s a great post to organise yourself. Jen Vincent, Teach Mentor Texts, and Kellee of Unleashing Readers decided to give It’s Monday! a kidlit focus. If you read and review books in children’s literature – picture books, chapter books, middle grade novels, young adult novels or anything in those genres – join them.
Hope you are all doing well. Feeling a little colder here. I went to the library recently to find they had updated their returns and issues machines. All so modern. Put all the books together under the scanner and all issued together. I wonder if they will ever work out how to float the books to the exact spot on the shelf all by themselves!

I usually borrow ebooks and audios online but over the past year I borrowed a couple of books and became acquainted with self-checkout. Helpful during a pandemic but I hope it doesn’t permanently take a job from someone!

Ahhh, libraries! I remember those. Ours have been closed for 13 months now 😦 BUT … our local one just began to re-open this week – just limited hours and only the front. You can’t browse yet but can see the new releases at the front and go to the front desk to pick up your holds – can’t wait!!

We have a self-serve checkout at our library. I read worker shortages caused by the pandemic are finding businesses replacing people with robots, and in 2020 there was an article on robots in libraries. I prefer the human touch.

How times are changing. We still do it the old time way but I know though main branches have this technology. I am a fan of Marie Force and Yates books.

I listened to A Family of Strangers after reading it too and really enjoyed it! I think I got more out of the audio then I did the book but that could have just been mood related. Such a good story. I’ve read the last half of that Kate Carlisle series but never managed to read the first book even though I own it. Need to get to it! Have a great week!

I thought the Kate Carlisle book was good but it got a bit drawn out at the end, but still fun.

I was surprised the first time I encountered the self checkout machine at the library. It is convenient but I still love the old card and date-punch system from when I was a kid. That was one of my favorite make-believe games to play. I’d find paper and slide it between some cabinet doors and pretend I was a librarian checking out books. The checkout process was a good time to talk to the librarian about your books and get recommendations for new books too. Oh well. Times change.

Whilst I love technology that streamlines and makes things easier it does make me worry about the future for librarians, who are always a great source of information on books and more.
As I child I loved the whole process of them taking your library cards (which were little cardboard envelopes with your details on), taking the book identification card from the front fly leaf to put in that envelope (which they kept) and then stamping the return date onto a special label in the book.
Our library is pretty much self service with a print out slip with return dates on.

It’s getting a little chillier here too.
It sounds like we have similar tech in our libraries. Our library doesn’t even have a service desk anymore which I think is a little sad. I’m looking forward to reading Johns book soon.

It is amazing how much–and how little–libraries have changed. No more card catalog but shelves filled with books are still there–in addition to all the stuff I download or otherwise read from home or office. I used to love going in and reading back issues (10 or more years ago) of magazines. Now the articles are digitized but looking at the photos and ads was half the fun.

Haha technology is wild isn’t it? Pretty soon libraries will be all automated! I hope not for the librarians’s sakes tho.
